Two new rose gardens have recently been designed and planted by eminent designers in eminent locations: Savill Gardens near Windsor and Wisley ,the principal garden of the RHS.
Wisley nearly did it for me, but sadly Savill didnt . Wisley will look good in about 3 years once the plants are more mature and some of the taller growing plants are giving some height to the scheme. Roses had been accompanied with perennials nad a good range of rose varieties chosen in groups. The paths encouraged one to meander through the site as well as directly from one end to the other..an effective amalgam of options.
Savill had an interesting layout for not a very big space, but its intricacy couldnt really be appreciated from the ground level or points of entry and the elevated structure, adding drama visually, wasnt adequately high to best see what is an intriguing design. Furthermore whilst one relished the great swathes of closely planted rsoes with lovely tonal blends the groups were possibly too large to offer enough variety to give continuous interest.
Whatever my opinions it is worth you going and having a look yourself ..let me know what you think !
